Abstract:

The article looks into the sexual revolution brought about by former soldier-turned-woman Christine Jorgensen, who became famous with her controversial sex-change in postwar U.S. The author highlights the controversial life of Jorgensen, who was born as George William Jorgensen Jr., and her subsequent sex-change in Denmark with Dr. Christian Hamburger. The story of Jorgensen became an illustrious part of the sexual revolution and became a prominent part in popular literature in the 1960's. Significantly, such stories of sex-change has become an episode in the history of sensational journalism, mass culture, and celebrity. Her story also brought issues of sexuality into the news. Historians have noted the contradictory trends of the postwar years.
