Abstract:

The article discusses the history of transvestites, transsexuals, and transgender characters on television shows. "The Streets of San Francisco," which was aired between 1972 and 1977 and starred actor Michael Douglas, featured a female impersonator who murdered several people. Cpl. Max Klinger, a character on the popular and long-running war comedy "M.A.S.H.," repeatedly cross-dressed in an unsuccessful effort to get discharged. The sitcom "Bosom Buddies" was focused around a pair of New York men who cross-dressed to live in a cheap women's hotel.
