Straight Talk About Hate Crimes Bills: Anti-Gay, Anti-Transgender Bias Stall Federal Hate Crimes Legislation

Abstract:

The article discusses issues relevant to hate crimes legislative bills in the United States focusing on anti-gay, anti-transgender bias that stalled federal hate crimes legislation. Apparently, the law has not been enacted because of the way people feel about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans. There is great opposition to hate crimes legislation on the political right, and the organizations that most ardently oppose the federal hate crimes legislation happen to be those that also oppose any form of protection for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people, or for same-sex couples.

TransForming Politics

Journal Article

Herizons, Volume 19, Number 3, p.21 (2006)

Accession Number:

Abstract:

The article focuses on the participation of transgender activists in politics. Transgender people are getting involved in activities similar to feminist movements, and feminist struggles have been the inspiration behind them. Transgender people are concerned about gender inequality, and want justice. Many female-to-male transgender people identify themselves as feminist, and take interest in women's studies. Despite the similarities, transgender issues and feminist issues are getting separated, and opposed to each other. Transgender activists need support from feminist organizations, and this will give birth to transgender feminism.
