"A couple of our members regularly attend the conferences and we thought it would be a great thing to bring it to Tucson," Southern Arizona Gender Alliance program coordinator C. Michael Woodward said. "Tucson is very trans-friendly. Also, the organizers were insistent on having a strong local organization and Wingspan fit that." The theme of "Transgender 2008" is "Toward a Greater Diversity." Organizers say the focus will be on lesser-heard voices of the transgender community, including ethnic minorities, youths, elders, and faith communities. About 85 workshops are planned, including sessions for people considering gender transition, as well as for people interested in advocating for transgender issues in the workplace and in the political arena.
"Better Than Chocolate" investigates the inclusion of transgendered women in lesbian space. The film makes a strong statement that it is logical and natural to welcome trans women to the lesbian community, and that those who reject this inclusion are old-fashioned, violent, or both. It is my assertion that the film makes this statement at the expense of both those who have nuanced reservations toward trans inclusion and those transwomen who desire inclusion into lesbian communities but aren't hyperfeminine.

The article discusses gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) issues in politics, focusing on the Republican Party in the United States. The different strains of thought among Republicans are analyzed. The religiously-motivated rejection of GLBT sexual behavior as a sinful choice is contrasted with the secular conservative stance of private politeness and public discomfort or silence. The author expresses hope that Republicans will become more accepting of GLBT people.
