Abstract:

The article focuses on the stories of GLBT activists involved in the Soulforce Equality Ride as they seek to change the U.S. attitude towards the GLBT community. Equality Ride, inspired by the Freedom Riders in the 1960s, is composed of 33 activists who invade antigay colleges. Just like the youth in 1961 who protested racial segregation, Equality Ride codirector Jake Reitan wants to do the same with gay and lesbian youth. They go to Christian universities and military academies that openly ban gay students to have an open dialogue to show that being Christian and queer are not mutually exclusive.
