The article focuses on the sex reassignment surgery (SRS) of Richard Raskind. He had been captain of Yale University's tennis team and enjoyed some success on the U.S. amateur circuit. He became an ophthalmologist and competed in the U.S. Open. After undergoing 10 years of psychoanalysis and a divorce, he decided to undergo a sex change operation and emerged as Renee Richards. When Richards moved to California, she joined a new medical practice. She also decided to become a professional tennis player, on the women's tour. Her participation received complaints from several women professional tennis players, the dispute was only settled by a 1977 New York State Supreme Court decision, ruling that, because of her SRS, she was indeed legally a woman.
