N.Y.C. to Expand School For Gay, Lesbian Youths

Abstract:

The first public high school in the U.S. devoted to needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students will open this fall in New York City of New York State, as of August 6, 2003. Harvey Milk High School is an expansion of a public school program that has been operating since 1984, through a partnership between the 1.1 million-student district's education department and the Hetrick-Martin Institute. Classes will continue to be offered at the institute, which is a nonprofit advocacy and multiservice group for gay youths. "Some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York said at a news conference.
