The article focuses on the role of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) as a watchdog of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) characterizations on television. Twenty years ago, when GLAAD was born, GLBT images were mostly limited to occasional television movies, a few episodes of regular series and "Brothers," a comedy series on Showtime. Today, there have been growth in the representations of gays and lesbians on television programs.
