This article presents an introduction to the Oct. 1, 2005 issue of "International Journal of Transgenderism." This issue focuses on the life of Virginia Prince, who played a central role in the development of the transgender community since the 1950s. She was a staunch promoter of heterosexual transvestism and the first person to organize an establishment that provided a safe setting in which transvestites and transexuals could come together and come out. Her advocacy of a transgenderist position since the late 1960s constituted a conceptual and identity revolution.
