Abstract:

The article presents an introduction to an issue of the "International Journal of Transgenderism." The issue looks at research on the impact of HIV/AIDS on transgender people. It presents needs assessment studies conducted in transgender communities in the United States. The studies look at social stigma, discrimination, and the lack of access to transgender-specific medical care. Issues that must be addressed in order to conduct an effective HIV prevention program among transgendered people include mental health, housing, substance abuse, and employment.
