The article examines the challenges that the emerging field of transgender theory poses to gay and lesbian studies. The author examines a calendar produced by the Lexington Bar, San Francisco's only gay bar that welcomes a lesbian clientele every night of the week. The author examines several photos from the calendar and discusses the way that gender identity is socially constructed. The author defends the concept of social construction and discusses the ways that new academic theory is challenging social construction of gender.
