"A couple of our members regularly attend the conferences and we thought it would be a great thing to bring it to Tucson," Southern Arizona Gender Alliance program coordinator C. Michael Woodward said. "Tucson is very trans-friendly. Also, the organizers were insistent on having a strong local organization and Wingspan fit that." The theme of "Transgender 2008" is "Toward a Greater Diversity." Organizers say the focus will be on lesser-heard voices of the transgender community, including ethnic minorities, youths, elders, and faith communities. About 85 workshops are planned, including sessions for people considering gender transition, as well as for people interested in advocating for transgender issues in the workplace and in the political arena.
